First-place Brockport takes two from Lakers

The Oswego State softball team gave first-place Brockport all it could handle on Tuesday afternoon but lost a pair of close games to the Golden Eagles in Oswego. Brockport won the first game 4-1 and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of the second game.

Brockport 4, Oswego State 1

An RBI single by Missy Constanza in the bottom of the first inning gave the Lakers a lead that held up through five innings behind starting pitcher Susie Burt. Brockport evened the score in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Lindsey Cole. The Golden Eagles then scored three runs in the seventh to earn the victory.

Burt suffered the loss for Oswego State and Brockport's Amanda Traylor was the winning pitcher. Constanza, Kelly Cooper, and Jessica Mills had the only hits in the game for the Lakers.

Brockport 9, Oswego State 8 (8 innings)

Brockport's Rachel Maxon delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning in a wild back-and-forth game.

The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning but found themselves trailing 8-3 heading into the top of the fifth. A five-run rally by Oswego State answered Brockport's five-spot in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game 8-8 where it remained until the bottom of the eighth.

Britanee Eckhard paced the eight-run Oswego State offense by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Sarah Castaldo also drove in two runs. Colleen Carmon and Jessica Mills scored two runs each.

Michelle Jackson suffered the loss in relief of Heather McBride. Amanda Traylor was the winning pitcher in relief for Brockport, earning her second victory of the afternoon.

Oswego State fell to 3-9 in the SUNYAC and 6-16 overall. Conference-leading Brockport is now 12-2 in the SUNYAC and 22-8 overall.
