The New Paltz Hawks defeated Oswego State 8-1 and 11-2 in a softball doubleheader at Oswego on Saturday. The Lakers fell to 4-13 on the year and 1-7 in SUNYAC games, while the Hawks improved to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
New Paltz 8, Oswego State 1
New Paltz scored seven runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie in the opening game of the doubleheader. Joelle Von Bischoffshausen had a two-run homer in the seventh to break the tie, and Amy O'Brien homered two batters later to extend the lead to 4-1. Lauren Motzkin added a two-run triple in the big inning.
Oswego State's run came on an RBI single from Michelle Jackson in the bottom of the second inning, bringing in Sarah Castaldo, who walked. The Lakers had four hits in the game, as Castaldo, Kelly Cooper, and Britanee Eckhard also hit safely.
Jackson was the losing pitcher, and Michelle Reinke was the winning pitcher for New Paltz.
New Paltz 11, Oswego State 2
The Hawks carried their offensive momentum from the last inning of the first game and scored seven runs in the first inning of the second game en route to a victory. Erin Fitzpatrick led off the bottom of the first with a home run, and Dale Cornelius had a two-run homer later in the inning for the Hawks.
New Paltz added three more runs in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth in a game that was shortened to five innings.
Both Oswego State runs came in the fourth inning as Kelly Cooper started the inning with a double and scored on a passed ball. Sarah Castaldo walked and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Mills.
Kelly O'Hea was the winning pitcher and allowed just three hits in five innings. Kaitlin Thibodeau took the loss for the Lakers.
