Lakers pick up softball split against Fredonia

The Oswego State softball team defeated Fredonia 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Oswego in the first game of a doubleheader, before dropping the second game by a 2-0 score.

The Lakers are now 5-14 overall and 2-8 in SUNYAC games. Fredonia is 11-13 overall and 5-7 in the league.

The Lakers trailed 2-0 against visiting Fredonia, but scored the tying runs in the bottom of the fourth and then added three more in the bottom of the fifth to get the victory.

Sarah Castaldo had an RBI triple in the fourth and came in to score on a single by Mallory Eggert. In the next inning, Jessica Mills started the rally with a leadoff single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then, with two outs, the next five Laker hitters reached base as two were hit by pitches and two more drew walks. Jillian Burns also had an RBI single in the rally.

Laker pitcher Michelle Jackson earned the complete-game victory allowing just five hits with five strikeouts.

Fredonia 2, Oswego State 0

Blue Devil pitcher Andrea Cornelius allowed six hits in a complete game shutout of the Lakers in the second game, and got all the offense she needed when Samantha Voncina homered to left in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was Voncina's fifth home run of the year, which sets a single-season record for the Blue Devils.

Jillian Burns and Heather Merino had two hits each for the Lakers.
