Lakers advance to SUNYAC championship with 4-1 win

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Fredonia 4-1 on Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego in a SUNY Athletic Conference semifinal game.

The Lakers will now advance to the SUNYAC championship game next Saturday at top-seeded Plattsburgh at 7 p.m.

Oswego State scored two goals late in the first period to take control of the game. Peter Magagna opened the scoring with a deflection of a centering pass from Ryan Ellis with 1:41 left in the period. Brendan McLaughlin doubled the lead with a goal with 34 seconds left in the period on an assist from Magagna.

After a scoreless second period, the Lakers scored with an extra attacker during a delayed penalty call against Fredonia as Derrell Levy's wraparound was saved, but Tony DiNunzio scored on the rebound to make it a 3-0 game.

Fredonia got its only goal of the game when Bryan Goudy scored a power-play goal on a rebound with 11:43 left, and assists went to Colin Sarfeh and Neal Sheehan.

The Lakers added an insurance goal with a power-play goal of their own on a pretty play started behind the net by Matt Whitehead, to DiNunzio who centered a pass that C.J. Thompson deflected in for his 10th goal of the year.
