Oswego State advances to SUNYAC Championship with win over Brockport

The Oswego State men's basketball team defeated Brockport 87-72 on Friday night in a SUNYAC semifinal game at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh.

With the victory, Oswego State will compete for the SUNYAC title on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the winner of the second semifinal game between Plattsburgh and Geneseo. The Lakers also avenged two regular-season losses to Brockport with the victory.

Oswego State set a SUNYAC tournament record with 12 blocked shots in the game. Mahamoud Jabbi had seven of them, and Dom White swatted away four Brockport shots, as the Lakers held Brockport to just 39.2 percent shooting from the field. Jabbi (11) and White (9) also helped the Lakers to a 46-33 rebounding advantage in the contest.

"Rebounding hasn't been the strongest part of our team this season but to out-rebound them by 13 shows that our guys really competed," Oswego State head coach Kevin Broderick said. "Dom and Mo blocked shots inside and really defended well inside. I wouldn't say we were perfect in that category, but those two erased a lot of our mistakes."

On the perimeter, the Lakers were led by steady play from senior point guard Nick Perioli and a strong all-around game from Tommy Downing who had 23 points, two assists, and two steals. Perioli had 24 points to lead the Lakers and made several key foul shots down the stretch as the Lakers maintained a double-digit advantage.

The Golden Eagles made a run with about six minutes remaining, as Sherod Harris made back-to-back 3-pointers to cut Oswego State's lead down to six points, but the Lakers worked the ball inside and drew fouls to take away Brockport's momentum.

"They're a great team and by beating us twice in the regular season they got our attention. We were able to handle their pressure," Broderick said.

Kyle Reuter added 11 points for Oswego State and Dom White had 10. With 11 blocked shots through two SUNYAC tournament games.
