Lakers open 2008 season with 2-0 loss to 10th-ranked Rochester

The Oswego State men's soccer team held nationally ranked University of Rochester scoreless for the opening 58 minutes of the contest, but gave up a pair of goals late in the second half in dropping a 2-0 decision to the host Yellowjackets in the opening round of the Flower City Classic on Friday, August, 29.

It was the first game of the season for both teams, with Rochester entering the game ranked 10th in the preseason among NCAA Division III teams by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Sophomore Eric Kukura earned the start in goal in his Oswego debut and kept the Lakers in the game for the opening half, stopping five of 11 Rochester shots. The defense held tough for the opening 14 minutes of the second half before Rochester scored the game's first goal, which turned out to be the eventual winning goal, at the 59:23 mark off a corner kick.

Kukura logged 71 minutes in the nets and made six saves before suffering a knee injury after stopping a Rochester scoring attempt on a corner kick.  Junior Nick Liberati came in to play the final 13 minutes in goal and yielded the game's second goal at 82:59. He finished with two saves.

Oswego will play St. John Fisher College in the final round of tournament play on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
