Oswego spikers in third place after day two of SUNYAC West pool play

The Oswego State volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of competition at the SUNYAC West Division round robin at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Laker Hall on Friday, Sept. 19, currently standing in third place out of six teams going into the final day of play.

SUNY Brockport and SUNY Fredonia, divisional co-champions a year ago, are currently tied for first place with 3-0 records.  After Oswego, SUNY Geneseo is in fourth place with a 1-2 mark, while Morrisville State and Buffalo State are looking for their first victory in a tie for fifth.

The Lakers faced Brockport to open the day, losing in three sets, 25-17, 25-16, 25-12.  Senior co-captain Amanda Cipriano (Solvay) was the lone highlight statistically, tallying six kills, eight digs, and a service ace. Senior Beth Widzinski (Amherst/Williamsville North, nine digs)  and freshman Jessica Isgro (Brockport, four digs) each served for a pair of aces as Oswego could only produce 16 kills for the match.

The team rebounded two hours later with a three-game sweep of Buffalo State, posting scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-21. The Lakers produced their best offensive effort to date this season with a .313 hitting percentage, compiling 42 kills against 11 errors on 99 attacks, and served for eight aces.

Isgro was one of many standout performers in the match, tallying 10 kills, a .303 hitting, percentage, 14 digs, and three aces.  The trio of junior Alyssa Brock (Pine Bush), Cipriano, and freshman Margaret Thorpe (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) each had seven kills, with Brock finishing with a .438 hitting percentage, Cipriano with a team-high 17 digs, and Thorpe with a .429 attack percentage.

Freshman Tressa Myers (Bridgeport/Chittenango) compiled six kills, while Widzinski collected eight digs and served for three aces, and freshman setter Katie VanKessel (Milbrook)  dished out 34 assists to go along with six digs and five kills.

On Thursday, Oswego opened with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Morrisville, with Brock compiling seven kills, a .363 hitting percentage, and three service aces.  Cipriano (nine digs) and Isgro (seven digs) each registered six kills and an ace, while Widzinski tallied match highs for aces (five) and digs (16).  Myers added five kills and a block, while Thorpe contributed four killd in the victory.

Oswego concludes the first half of SUNYAC divisional play on Saturday with 10 a.m match with Fredonia and a 2 p.m. showdown with Geneseo.
