Senior captains Downing, Reuter help Lakers end three-game losing streak with 67-57 win at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Seniors Kyle Reuter (Mexico) and Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) each scored 17 points as Oswego State beat Cortland, 67-57, at Corey Gymnasium, halting a three-game losing skid. The Lakers (6-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) took the lead for good on a Downing three-pointer with 4:48 remaining and pulled away in the final 1:49, closing the game on a 10-2 run.

Downing made 5-of-8 three-pointers in the contest. Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/SUNY Cobleskill) added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers.

Senior Carson Niehoff (West Islip) led Cortland (4-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) with 16 points. Junior Mike Lewis (Brewerton/Central Square) scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and junior Paul Oliver (Phoenix) scored 11 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Sophomore Chris Milke (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) chipped in with six points and career-highs of 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Cortland led 37-31 at halftime after a period that featured seven ties. Oswego scored the first eight points of the second half, capped by a Downing trey, and took a 39-37 lead with 17:03 remaining.

Oswego's lead grew to nine points at 50-41 on a Chad Burridge (Hannibal) layup with 10:55 left. The Red Dragons, however, responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:10, capped by a Lewis putback, and led 51-50 with 8:45 on the clock.

Cortland's final lead came at 53-52 with 6:05 left on a Niehoff layup. After Downing's go-ahead three-pointer, Lewis hit a free throw at the 3:48 mark to keep Cortland within a point at 55-54. The score stayed that way until Conor Monaghan (Brooklyn/Xavier) nailed a jumper at the 2:11 mark to push Oswego's lead to three.

A Lewis free throw with 1:49 left cut the Cortland deficit to two, but Francois followed with a layup at the 1:23 mark and two foul shots with 58 seconds remaining to push Oswego's lead to six. Cortland got no closer than four points in the final minute.

Cortland shot 47 percent from the field in the first half, but was held to just 19 percent (6-of-32) in the second half and finished at 33 percent. Oswego didn't fare much better, finishing at 37 percent from the floor. The Lakers did, however, make 8-of-19 three-pointers (42 percent) and 19-of-25 free throws (76 percent), compared to Cortland's 2-of-12 from long range and 11-of-22 from the foul line.
