Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) scored a game-high 18 points, hitting four of seven shots from three-point range, while junior
Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/SUNY Cobleskill) and freshman
Chad Burridge tallied 17 and 16 points, respectively, in leading Oswego State to its second straight triumph in SUNYAC play, with a 90-60 victory over host Morrisville State College on Friday, Jan. 23.
The win kept the Lakers (10-5, 6-2) in second place in the conference standings, one game behind leader Oneonta State (12-5), who sports a 7-1 conference mark. The Red Dragons defeated visiting Potsdam, 78-65 on Friday, setting up a battle for first place between the two teams on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Chase PE Center in Oneonta.
Downing shot 7-for-14 from the floor, dished out a game-high six assists, pulled down five rebounds and made eight steals in 30 minutes of action. Francois, who shot 7-for-12 from the floor and made three of four free throws, also grabbed 14 rebounds, posting his tenth double-double of the season, while Burridge, who tallied 10 points in the second half, shot 7-for 13 from the floor, pulled down nine rebounds, and compiled a steal and a game-high five blocked shots.
Sophomore Jamal Lightbourne (Elmsford/Alexander Hamilton) came off of the bench to score 11 points (4-for-5 from the free-throw line) and pull down eight rebounds. All 12 players saw action for the Lakers, who shot 42.9 percent (33 of 77) from the field, including 51.4 percent (19-for-37), and 11-for-26 from beyond the arc.
Downing scored 15 points came in the second half as Oswego, who led 39-30 at halftime, opened the second half with a 17-4 run in the opening 6:36 to take a 53-36 lead and were never challenged for the remainder of the game. Their biggest lead was 34 points as sophomore Jose Uribe (Far Rockaway/Newtown) and junior Luke Schrader (Mohawk/Onondaga CC) connected on back-to-back three-pointers for a 90-56 lead wirh 1:11 remaining.
Sophomore Bryan Eddy was the top scorer for the Mustangs (2-13, 0-7 SUNYAC) with 14 points, followed by junior Garnell Vaughn with 10 points.
