Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) became the second player on the Oswego State men's basketball team this season to score 1,000 career points and was one of five starters to score in double digits, but visiting St. Lawrence overcame an eight-point defict midway into the first half to take a five-point halftime lead and never trailed for the rest of the game en route to a 90-87 win over the Lakers in a non-conference contest at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 6.
Downing, who came into the game needing eight points to reach the milestone mark, finished with 16 points and dished out a game-high nine rebounds. After being held to five points in the opening half, he scored 11 points in the second stanza, surpassing the 1,000-point mark on a three pointer with 9:54 remaining in the game.
Freshman Chad Burridge led the Lakers with his third "double-double" of the season, tallying 21 points on eight of 14 shooting on the floor and hitting all five free throws, to go with 11 rebounds. Junior Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/SUNY Cobleskill) also posted a "double-double", his fifth of the season, with 18 points (8-for-9 FG shooting) and 11 rebounds. Senior Kyle Reuter (Mexico), who obtained his 1,000th point in the second game of the season, finished with 14 points, followed by freshman Conor Monnaghan (Brooklyn/Xavier) with 11 points.
Oswego led for the majority of the first half, taking its biggest lead at 25-17 with 11:13 to play on a three pointer from Monaghan. St. Lawrence answered with eight straight points to tie the game with 9:22 to play. Two lead changes followed before the Saints took the lead for good on a jumper a minute later, sparking a 17-8 run to stretch the lead to ten points (45-35) with 3:24 remaining in the half. The Lakers would cut the lead to five points (49-44) going into the half on a layup from Reuter with 22 seconds remaining.
The Lakers opened the second half on a three-point play by Burridge 17 seconds in, pulling to within a basket (49-47). Oswego would challenge the Saints on five other occasions, the closest coming with 5:07 to play when Downing hit a pair of free throws to come within a point (72-71). But St. Lawrence answered with mini runs on each occasion to build the lead up to 7-8 points.
St. Lawrence also had five players (four starters) in double digits, led by Tom Wopperer with a game-high 26 points.
