Max Guliani (New York, N.Y.) scored with 2:50 remaining in regulation to help the Oswego State men's soccer team defeat host Alfred University 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Saxons held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the Lakers came back to score the final two goals for the victory. Oswego State, which is now 6-9-1 overall, will travel to Geneseo to face the Blue Knights in the first round of the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. Alfred dropped to 5-9-1 overall on the season.
Frankie Mannino put the Saxons ahead 1-0 in the 40th minute of play with an unassisted goal as Alfred held a slim 5-3 advantage in shots for the period.
The Lakers came out strong after halftime, though, as they fired 14 shots in the second half. Freshman Brandon Carnovale (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) knotted the score at 1-1 after receiving a pass from Ryan Aman (Jr., Walworth, N.Y.) at the 66:49 mark. Oswego State grabbed its first lead of the contest when Max Guliani tallied the eventual game-winner with less than three minutes to play.
The Lakers used three goalkeepers in the contest, including Nick Liberati (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who made two first-half saves and allowed one goal, Marcus LaRobardiere (Jr., Camden, N.Y.), who made one save in 18:23, and Eric Kukura (Jr., Hilton, N.Y.), who made one save in the final 26:37. Alfred had a pair of goalkeepers in net, Pat Grimmer and Elliott Thorpe, who combined to make five saves.
