Junior Chris Laganiere (Owego, N.Y.) registered three goals during a two-period offensive burst as the second-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Morrisville 8-1 on Saturday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Mustangs held a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Lakers scored the next eight goals to cruise to the victory. Oswego State improved to 8-1-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the SUNYAC, while Morrisville dropped to 3-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the league.
Dana Calderone netted the first goal of the game as he gave Morrisville an early 1-0 lead at the 12:18 mark in the first period, which was where the score remained heading into the first intermission.
The Lakers came out of the locker room with a renewed intensity as they tied the game at 1-1 two minutes into the second period when assistant captains Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ont.) and Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) found linemate Tyler Leimbrock (Fr., Bolton, Ont.) for his second goal of the season. Oswego State took the lead for good nearly four minutes later when Laganiere tallied his first goal of the contest with assists credited to Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) and Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.). The goals kept coming in the frame as Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Hunstville, Ont.) registered a power play goal after receiving a pass off the sticks of Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Laganiere at 8:57, and Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) connected with Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont) at 17:22 as the Lakers held a 4-1 lead at the end of two periods.
Momentum spilled into the third period as well as Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) recorded his second goal of the season as Musselwhite and Dormiedy received their second assists of the contest on the first offensive possession of the frame. Two of the three remaining Oswego State goals came from Laganiere as he increased his season total to nine, while Selleck capped off the scoring midway through the period when he broke free at center ice to skate in on Mustang goalie Mike Will unabated with a top-shelf wrist shot. The line of Laganiere, Selleck, and Fox finished the night with 10 points on four goals and six assists.
Laker netminder Kyle Gunn-Taylor (West Seneca, N.Y.) improved to 5-0-0 on the season as he stopped 22 shots and allowed one goal. Morrisville goaltender Caylin Relkoff made 25 saves on 32 shots before Mike Will came into the game to record three saves and allow one goal.
