The Oswego State men's basketball team used an 11-1 run down the stretch to hold off Clarkson University in a 60-46 victory on Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers led 49-45 with 5:21 remaining before Hayden Ward triggered the decisive run with a pair of free throws and a layup. Oswego State controlled the glass as it out-rebounded the Golden Knights 54-34. Chad Burridge and Ward finished with double-doubles as Burridge contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Ward tallied 13 points and 14 boards. The Lakers improved to 3-1 overall, while Clarkson fell to 3-2.

The first half was a seesaw battle between each squad until Oswego State scored the last four points of the period to take a 29-24 lead into intermission.  The Lakers held a 25-14 advantage in rebounds, which included 10 offensive rebounds that resulted in 12 points.  Chad Burridge (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) carried the bulk of the offense for Oswego State as he posted 11 points in the half.

Clarkson came out of the locker room with a hot hand as it went on a 10-2 run with a pair of three-pointers from Felix Llanos to take a 34-33 lead in the first three minutes of the second half.  The Lakers answered back with an 11-2 run of their own due to a series of layups from four different players to build an eight-point 44-36 lead with 11:22 left on the clock.

The Golden Knights stayed within striking distance as Elson Pickering laid the ball in the hoop to bring Clarkson to within four points at 49-45 and 5:21 remaining.  However, Hayden Ward (Fr., Montauk, N.Y.) scored the next four points to jump start the final push for Oswego State en route to the 60-44 victory.

The Laker defense forced the Golden Knight offense, which had averaged 76.2 points in its first games, to shoot 24.6 percent from the field (14-of-57) and 19.4 percent in the second half.  Elson Pickering was the only Clarkson player to reach double digits as he tallied 10 points to go along with six rebounds.  In addition to the rebound differential, Oswego State also held an advantage in free throw attempts as it converted 23 of 37 shots (62.2 percent), while Clarkson hit 11 of 18 attempts.

The Lakers open conference play on Friday night against Brockport at 8 p.m. in Oswego.
