Oswego State shot 30.7 percent from the floor and a season-low 18.3 percent from the three-point line, while visiting SUNY Geneseo shot 58.5 percent from the floor and 75 percent from three-point range in coming away with a dominant 91-61 victory in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
The win moved the Blue Knights (15-6, 9-3) into sole possession of first place in the conference standings, while the Lakers (13-8, 9-4) fell into a two-way tie with Oneonta State for second place. Oneonta, which had a chance to move into second place alone, dropped a 72-64 decision at Cortland.
Oswego only managed to hit 23 of 75 shots from the field, including seven of 38 from beyond the arc, and grabbed 31 rebounds, while Geneseo hit 38 of 65 shots from the floor, connected on nine of 12 three-pointers, and grabbed 52 rebounds.
Four of five starters scored in double digits for the Blue Knights, led by senior guard Scott Morton with a game-high tying 21 points, hitting 8-for-14 from the field (three of four from 3-point range), grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out six assists. Junior Brandon Simpson and senior Jeff Howe each turned in "double-double" performances, with Simpson compiling 20 points (10-for-18 FG shooting) and a game-high 20 rebounds to go with five assists, and Howe following with 19 points, 10 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks and a steal. Junior Kyle Stevens chipped in 13 points, going 3-for-4 from three-point range, and added eight rebounds and three assists.
Seniors Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) and Kyle Reuter (Mexico) were the lone players in double digits for Oswego. Downing registered a game-high tying 21 points on seven of 20 field goal shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, shot 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, dished out a game-high seven rebounds, and made six steals, while Reuter finished with 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the field (3-for-9 from three-point range) and tallied three steals. Freshman Chad Burridge (Hannibal) finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and a game-leading five blocked shots.
Oswego did not lead at any point in the contest as Geneseo took a 44-30 lead at halftime on 64.3 percent (18 of 28) shooting from the field, making six of seven shots (85.7 percent) beyond the arc. Oswego was held to 28.9 percent (11 of 38) field goal shooting in the half. The Blue Knights maintained their double-digit lead for all of the second half, leading by as many as 22 points (73-51) with 8:14 to play and building its biggest lead to 34 points (88-54) with 2:40 to play. Simpson and Howe combined to score 22 of the team's 47 second half points, with Simpson pulling down 12 rebounds in the half.
Oswego will host key back-to-back SUNYAC weekend contest with New Paltz and Oneonta State, respectively, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14. Both contests are scheduled for 8 p.m. starts.
