Oswego State fell into a 15-point hole 11:31 into the first half and could not recover for the entire game in registering its third defeat in the last five games with an 82-42 loss at Utica College on Tuesday, Feb. 3. It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Lakers (9-10), who finished 2-7 against non-SUNYAC opponents.
Freshman Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) was the only Oswego player in double figures, tallying 10 points, pulling down a game-high tying seven rebounds, and adding two steals and a blocked shot in 24 minutes of action. Senior Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) and sophomores Colleen McCready (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) and Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley) each chipped in six points as the Lakers were held to 32.1 percent (17 of 53) field goal shooting and committed 19 turnovers, which resulted in 23 points from the Pioneers (14-5).
Oswego held the lead twice in the opening minutes of the first half, the last coming at 6-4 on a jumper by Ryan 2:56 into the game before Utica went on a 16-0 run to take a 20-6 lead at the 6:29 mark. The Pioneers would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game, taking a 44-21 lead into the locker room and making the final score its largest lead.
Jessica Berry was one of four players in double digits for Utica, scoring a game-high 22 points on 11-for-14 shooting from the floor to go with four steals and seven rebounds. The Pioneers shot 60.1 percent (35-for-58) from the floor, including 52.9 percent (nine of 17) from three-point range.
The Lakers will face conference leader SUNY Cortland In a SUNYAC contest on Friday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
