Late second-half run leads Cortland past Oswego State, 63-53

Oswego State held a 15-point lead with fourteen minutes to play in the second half, but SUNY Cortland went on a 32-7 run the rest of the way in pulling out a 63-53 win in SUNYAC women's basketball action on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.  The loss was the fourth for the Lakers in their last six games.

Four players scored in double figures for the Lakers (9-11, 7-4 SUNYAC). Freshman Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) led the quartet with 14 points.  Senior Heather Moreno (Queensbury/Lake George) and sophomore Traci Bacon (Massena) scored 12 points each, with Bacon pulling down a team leading seven rebounds, while  junior Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) added 10 points.

Cortland junior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) led all scorers with 29 points, and added five rebounds and five steals.  She scored 19 of those points in the second half on three of four shooting from the 3-point line.  Two other Cortland players were in double figures on the night, sophomore Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge) scored 10 points and senior Kristin Ciccone (Long Beach) also added 10.

Oswego struggled holding on to the ball all night committing 23 turnovers 12 of those coming in the second half.  The Lakers also shot 34 percent in the second half while Cortland shot 62 percent.

The Lakers will look to end their two game skid tomorrow night in a conference matchup at The College at Brockport at 6 p.m.
