The Oswego State softball team extended its longest winning streak of the season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of host Utica College on Wednesday, April 15. The Lakers posted a 5-1 triumph in the opening game and followed with a 10-6 win in the nightcap.
Trailing 1-0 through three innings of game one, Oswego scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, added a run in the fifth, and scored twice in the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop Shannon Baker (Hannibal) went perfect at the plate with four hits in four at-bats, scoring twice, while freshman catcher Eileen Joyce (Levittown/Division Avenue) also scored twice and hit 2-for-3.
Junior second baseman Erin Tracy (Pulaski) and classmate designated player Elyse Youngman (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) each belted two-run singles for the Lakers, who outhit the Pioneers, 11-7. Senior Michelle Jackson (Amsterdam) tossed a complete-game seven hitter, striking out seven.
In game two, Utica jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings before Oswego tied the score with three runs in the top of the third and took its first lead of the game (6-4) with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Pioneers tied things up at 6-6 with two runs in the fifth inning before the Lakers broke it open in the top of the seventh with four runs.
Senior catcher Ellen Dungey (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbridge) went 3-for-4, driving in a pair of runs, while Tracy finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Baker (run, RBI), Youngman (RBI), and senior leftfielder Keri Starr (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) each tallied a hit, with Starr scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Junior Erika Ayers (Holley) pitched a complete game, striking out two batters.
