Box Score
Matt Giunto scored late in the first half and Luke Lennox scored late in the second half as St. John Fisher defeated the Oswego State men's soccer team 2-0 in the Flower City Soccer Classic at Rochester. The Cardinals improved 1-1-1, while the Lakers fell to 0-3.
Giunto smashed a free kick into the Oswego net at 36:49, right after Ryan Aman of the Lakers was yellow-carded for a foul just outside the top of the penalty arc. Lennox insured the victory at 88:37 when he scored on a breakaway. He cut into the box, swept to his right to avoid the advancing Matt Wopperer (who charged out of the Oswego goal), and rolled the ball into the open net.
The game was notable for a high number of missed scoring opportunities by both teams. Oswego was most effective looking for Dave Baldanza at the top of the lineup. He set up teammates twice in the first half, only to see the Fisher defense break up the passes. Oswego had two good chances to equalize in the second half. Fourteen minutes in, Chris Carra's right wing cross to the back post was just out of the reach of Felipe Cavalcanti. Midway through the half, Jim Mertz shot the ball wide left on a two-on-one breakaway.
Wopperer had three saves for the Lakers. Adam Durst stopped three shots for Fisher. The Cardinals held a 14-12 advantage in shots.
