Men's Basketball Defeats St. Lawrence 65-62 In Overtime

Box Score

Conor Monaghan's (So., Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup with 16 seconds remaining in overtime provided enough separation for the Oswego State men's basketball team to hang on for a 65-62 victory against St. Lawrence on Tuesday in Canton, N.Y. Chad Burridge (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) paced all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds, as the Laker offense shot 45.3 percent from the field (29-for-64) and 41.2 percent from three-point range. The Saints shot only 31.8 percent (21-for-66), but made 11 more free throws than Oswego State. The Lakers improved to 5-3 overall, while St. Lawrence dropped to 4-7.

After trailing 5-4 in the early stages, Oswego State put together a 16-3 run behind eight points from Burridge and capped off by a three-pointer from Jose Uribe (Jr., Queens, N.Y.) to take a 20-8 lead.  However, the Saints closed out the first half on a 13-5 run of their own to close the gap to four points with a halftime score of 27-23 in favor of the Lakers.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle until head coach Adam Stockwell's squad established an eight-point 54-46 advantage with 2:59 remaining in regulation.  St. Lawrence had another late surge before Josh Sharlow knotted the game at 56-56 with 28 seconds left, but Oswego State was unable to generate a clear look at the basket.

In overtime, the Saints grabbed a two-point lead with 1:36 left to play, but a three-point shot from Ryan Sheridan (So., Blauvelt, N.Y.) on the following possession put the Lakers back on top 61-60.  A pair of St. Lawrence free throws kept the Saints within one point with 17 seconds left.  Conor Monaghan hit a layup to put Oswego State ahead 65-62, and grabbed a pivotal defensive rebound when Sharlow's game-tying shot was off the mark.

Joining Burridge in double-digits was Ryan Sheridan, who contributed 11 points.  Sophomore point guard Sean Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) came off the bench to add six assists and five rebounds.  Josh Sharlow was the lone Saints' player to reach double-figures with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Oswego State resumes conference play at home against Cortland on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.
