Men's Soccer Falls To Geneseo 2-1

Box Score

The Oswego State men's soccer team scored late on Saturday, but it would not be enough as it lost 2-1 at Geneseo. The loss was the Lakers second straight in conference and dropped them to 5-8-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the SUNYAC. With the win, the Blue Knights improved to 7-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play. Oswego State is in a three-way tie for sixth in conference with two SUNYAC games remaining.

Geneseo controlled the tempo early, as it rifled off all three of its first-half shots on goal in the game's first ten minutes. Laker goalie Matt Wopperer saved the first two, but was unable to stop Ben Ariola's shot in the tenth minute that gave the Blue Knights an early lead. Geneseo's Colin Begy assisted the goal.

The Lakers were outshot 7-2 in the first half and they trailed by one going into halftime. During the contest, Geneseo's Ian Mort fired seven shots, four of which were on goal. In the 48th minute, Mort's first shot of the half put the Blue Knights up 2-0.

Shots were more even in the second half as Oswego State generated seven chances to eight for Geneseo. In the 77th minute, reserve goalkeeper #P.J. Goodwin# came into the game to play the field to try to inspire a Laker comeback.

Five minutes later, a Mike Naab shot hit the post and in the 88th minute, Goodwin cashed in on a chance off a pass from captain Tony Greene. The goal cut the lead to one, but the Lakers didn't register another shot in the game.

Wopperer finished the game with six saves. Geneseo netminder Sam Murphy recorded five stops.

Oswego State plays at New Paltz, one of the clubs it is tied with, on Friday at 3 p.m.
