Sue Schoff (Fr., Little Falls, N.Y.) drilled a base hit up the middle in the ninth inning to give the Oswego State softball team a walk-off 5-4 win over visiting Nazareth on Monday. The Lakers trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth when
Marie Steding (Fr., Central Square, N.Y.) drove in the tying run before coming around to score the decisive run. Oswego State fell in the first game of the twinbill 3-0 to move to 2-18 overall, while the Golden Flyers moved to 9-11.
Nazareth's Kelly Kocher stole the show on the mound in game one, as she struck out 16 Laker hitters and allowed just one hit. A lead-off single in the top of the third by Kelley Horbal led to the Golden Flyers' first run before scoring a second run later in the frame following a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.
Nazareth tacked on another run in the fifth after an Oswego State error to take a 3-0 lead. Kocher was on her way to recording a no-hitter when Eileen Joyce (So., Levittown, N.Y.) looped a single into left field between the outfielder and the shortstop. Sarah Thayer (Fr., Winthrop, N.Y.) went the distance on the mound for the Lakers scattering eight hits for three runs in the losing effort.
In the nightcap, Oswego State got its offense going in the first inning when Joyce reached after a Nazareth error with two outs. Christine Linguanti (Jr., Monroe, N.Y.) ripped a double into left field to score Joyce for the early 1-0 edge. The Lakers took a two-run lead in the third when Joyce hit a two-out double to drive in Shannon Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) from second base.
The Golden Flyers responded with runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to grab a 3-2 lead. Marie Steding led an Oswego State rally in its last at-bat by lacing a single up the middle of the infield with one out. Steding advanced to second after Nicole Ouellette (Fr., Castleton, N.Y.) grounded out, but came around to tie the game when Schoff ripped a double of the fence in right centerfield.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Polly Muehlenkamp drove in the go-ahead run for Nazareth with two outs in the ninth. However, the Lakers continued to battle as they earned the come-from-behind victory.
Marie Steding picked up the win after throwing five innings in relief with three runs on five hits. Halie Bloom (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) pitched four innings, surrendering one run on six hits. Casey Mathers suffered the loss despite striking out eight.
Oswego State will wrap its current home stand on Wednesday against Utica starting at 3 p.m.
