The Oswego State softball team took advantage of Utica errors and timely hitting early in the second game to give the Lakers a 5-2 victory to earn the series split with the Pioneers on Wednesday in Oswego. Utica won game one of the twinbill 10-0 in five innings behind a two-hitter thrown by Madison Dinsmore. Oswego State, which improved to 3-19 overall, will travel to Fredonia on Friday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Pioneers moved to 9-17 on the year.

The Laker offense put the ball in play in the first game, but only came up with two hits and just three strikeouts.  Utica gained an early lead after a two-run blast by Hannah Barton in the first inning.  The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth, but exploded for six runs on six hits in the fifth inning to record the win.

Sarah Thayer (Fr., Winthrop, N.Y.) suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.  Halie Bloom (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing five earned runs on six hits.

Oswego State bounced back in the second game starting in the third inning when Marie Steding (Fr., Central Square, N.Y.) helped her cause on the mound with a double before coming around to score.  Sue Schoff (Fr., Little Falls, N.Y.) followed with a double of her own before being driven in by Eileen Joyce (So., Levittown, N.Y.).  Joyce scored the final run of the inning after a Utica wild pitch to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers answered back with a run in the top of the fourth, but Oswego State capitalized on another Utica error to maintain the three-goal advantage.  After each squad added runs in the sixth inning, Steding sat the Pioneers down in order to give the Lakers a 5-2 victory.  Steding recorded the win scattering ten hits over seven innings to go along with four strikeouts.

Shannon Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.), Erin Tracy (Sr., Pulaski, N.Y.), Eileen Joyce, and Steding each recorded two hits during the game for Oswego State.
