The Oswego State softball team stuck with St. John Fisher on Wednesday, but was unable to generate enough run support as the Lakers suffered 5-2 and 2-1 losses in Rochester. Oswego State, which dropped to 1-13 overall, will host its first home doubleheader of the season on Friday afternoon against Brockport with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. The Cardinals improved to 10-10 overall.
In game one, St. John Fisher grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the second inning after Lauren O'Brien hit a double to the gap in right field driving in two runs before coming around to score two batters later. The Cardinals tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to take a four-run lead.
Oswego State led off the fourth with two straight singles from Shannon Baker and Amy Easterly. Ashley Sheridan singled up the middle of the infield to drive in both runners to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. However, St. John Fisher capitalized on two Laker miscues to score one run in the following at-bat to make the score 5-2, which is where it remained.
Marie Steding went four innings on the mound for Oswego State giving up two earned runs on six hits. Halie Bloom allowed three hits and zero runs in the final two innings. Danielle Leone pitched a complete-game three-hitter for St. John Fisher to earn the win.
The Lakers matched their hit count from game one in the first inning of game two. With Stephanie Sarcona and Sue Schoff on first and second, Siobhan Joyce delivered a two-out double to left center to give Oswego State a 1-0 lead. The score stood there until the Cardinals put together a two-run rally in their half of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead into Oswego State's last at-bat. The Lakers went down in order to give St. John Fisher the 2-1 victory.
Oswego State pitcher Sarah Thayer completed five innings and faced two batters in the sixth to suffer the loss after allowing six hits and two runs. Bloom again appeared in relief giving up one hit. Sarah Stefanon threw a complete game for the Cardinals allowing six hits, while striking out 10 batters.
