After dropping the first two sets, the Oswego State volleyball team came back to win the third set, but was unable to complete the comeback in its home opener in a 3-1 (25-9, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22) loss to St. John Fisher on Wednesday. The Cardinals controlled net play as they recorded 48 kills compared to 34 for the Lakers. Oswego State, which fell to 2-7, will look to get back in the win column at the Union Invitational this weekend. St. John Fisher improved to 4-3 with the win.
The Cardinals came out on fire as they recorded a stellar .391 hitting performance on 11 kills and just two errors to run away with the first set.
In the second set, Laker senior
Rachel Rossi rattled off six straight service points to give Oswego State an 11-6 lead. St. John Fisher evened the set at 16-16 behind a pair of Becca Smith kills and Sydney Kandefer service aces. The Cardinals closed out the second set by outscoring the Lakers 9-2 to take a 2-0 lead.
Head coach Pat Hanlon's squad bounced back from its slow start by taking another early 8-2 lead behind the strong serving of
Liz Crouch and
Kelsey Ihle. St. John Fisher cut the deficit to three points at 15-12, but two Cardinal hitting miscues combined with two Crouch service aces put Oswego State ahead 20-12 en route to winning the third set 25-15.
The score was knotted at 10-10 in the final set before St. John Fisher rattled off four straight points. The Lakers gradually chipped away at the lead and pulled to within one point at 21-20 after a service ace by Ihle. However, the Cardinals outscored Oswego State 4-2 down the stretch for the victory.

Jess Isgro paced the Laker offense with 13 kills followed
Katie van Kessel with six.
Stephany Olsheski dished out 26 assists, while
Liz Crouch led the back row with 18 digs. St. John Fisher had three players reach double-digit kills, including Becca Smith, Syndey Kandefer, and Rachel Kleine with 16, 13, and 11, respectively. Amy Street finished with a double-double as she tallied 39 assists and 12 digs.
