Men's Basketball Drops Double Overtime Thriller, 75-73, To Oneonta

Box Score

The Oswego State men's basketball team recorded game-tying baskets at the end of regulation and the first overtime period, but it was unable to come up with another as the Lakers fell at Oneonta, 75-73, in double overtime Tuesday night.  The contest appeared to be headed to a third overtime frame when Chad Burridge blocked a shot by Troy Talbot, but Derek Hahn came away with the rebound and registered the putback as time expired for the victory.

It was the first conference loss of the season for Oswego State, which dropped to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC standings.  The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 in the league and 4-7 on the season.

The Lakers opened the game on a 14-4 run behind seven points from Burridge, four points from Brenden Nollet, and a three-point play by Sean Michele.  Oswego State kept the double-digit lead until Oneonta closed out the final eight minutes of the first half on a 20-6 run of its own.  The Red Dragons held a 34-30 lead at the half, as both teams shot above 50 percent from the floor.

Oneonta built a six-point advantage, 50-44, midway through the second half, but the Oswego State defense clamped down as it held the Red Dragons scoreless for the next five minutes.  As Oneonta struggled to score, Kevin Kucel capped off a string of 11 straight Laker points with a layup, giving Oswego State a five-point lead.  The Red Dragons stormed back to take a 60-58 lead following a three-pointer by Brian Hooks with two minutes remaining in regulation.  Kucel hit another layup on the next Laker series, but no team scored the rest of the way to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Ryan Sheridan fed Burridge for a layup that tied the game with 17 seconds left.  Sheridan stole the ball on the ensuing Oneonta possession to give Oswego State a chance to win the game.  A shot got off, but did not find the bottom of the hoop to force a second overtime.

As in the first overtime, Burridge tied the game with 34 ticks left on a layup.  The Red Dragons came down the floor where Talbot's initial shot was blocked by Burridge.  Hahn corralled the rebound for the putback and the game-winning basket as time expired.

Oneonta shot well at 48.4 percent (30-of-62), including 58.3 percent on 7-of-12 shooting in both overtime periods.  The Lakers shot 41.2 percent from the field.  Neither squad finished the game above 54 percent from the charity stripe, as they combined to miss six free throws in both overtimes.

Burridge posted a double-double with 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting and 11 rebounds.  Brenden Nollet also chipped in 12 points to go along with seven boards in the losing effort.  Brian Hooks and Hahn tallied 18 points each for Oneonta, while Dan McLaren added 17.

Last season, both squads engaged in a double-overtime game at Oneonta with the Red Dragons posting a win by the score of 83-77.

The Lakers will look to bounce back Friday when they host Potsdam at 8 p.m.
