Paul Rodrigues' seventh goal of the season could not have come at a better time, as his power-play goal gave the No. 1 Oswego State men's ice hockey team a 5-4 overtime road win against Fredonia Saturday night after surrendering a 4-0 lead. Rodrigues scored 55 seconds into the extra frame after being fed a pass from Justin Fox and Luke Moodie to help the Lakers move to 10-0-0 in the conference and 17-2-0 overall. The Blue Devils fell to 9-10-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the SUNYAC.
Oswego State held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period after it received goals from #Stephen Mallaro and Ian Boots#. Mallaro's goal came 34 seconds into a Blue Devil slashing penalty with assists going to Moodie and Fox. #Jon Whitelaw and Andrew Mather# were credited with helpers on Boots' 10th marker of the year.
The Lakers continued to build on their lead when Tim Carr and Rodrigues found Tyler Leimbrock for his third goal of the season at 2:41 in the second period. Owen Kelly made the score 4-0 when he got the puck past Fredonia goalie Mark Friesen, prompting the Blue Devil coaching staff to make a goaltending change after he made 13 saves. Fredonia got on the scoreboard before intermission after a goal by Billy Sanborn, making it a 4-1 contest.
Early in the third period, the Blue Devils had a 5-on-3 opportunity after Oswego State was whistled for tripping and boarding penalties. Fredonia took advantage of the situation as Bryan tallied his tenth goal of the season at the 5:10 mark. The Blue Devils continued to build on the momentum as Andrew Christ recorded an unassisted goal minutes later to make it one-goal game at 4-3.
Fredonia pulled its goalie with 30 seconds remaining to gain the extra attacker. The strategy paid off as the Blue Devils knotted the score at 4-4 with five seconds remaining in regulation after a goal by Mat Hehr. However, as the horn sounded in regulation, Fredonia was assessed a roughing penalty that carried over into overtime, giving the Lakers the skater advantage.
Oswego State capitalized on the chance when Rodrigues scored the game-winning goal as the Lakers finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play.
Laker goaltender Paul Beckwith made 28 saves to improve to 13-0-0. Fredonia's Jeff Holloway finished with 15 saves to earn the hard-luck loss in relief of Friesen.
Oswego State will travel to the North Country for games at Potsdam on Friday and Plattsburgh on Saturday. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m.
