Men's Soccer Lets Early Lead Slip Away in Fredonia

Box Score

The Oswego State men's soccer team struck first at Fredonia on Friday, but the Blue Devils scored two goals of their own in the first half for a 2-1 victory in SUNYAC play. The Lakers fall to 5-6-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils rise to 9-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.

Mike Naab (So., Ontario, N.Y.) scored on a penalty kick for the Lakers in the 20th minute to give them their first lead in five games. Naab finished the contest with three of the Lakers' eight shots.

However, three minutes later, Fredonia tied the score at one with an unassisted goal of its own. At 38:32, the Blue Devils' David Thoin connected on a shot from the top of the box for the eventual game-winner.

Neither goalkeeper made a save in the first half, but both keepers had to stop a pair of shots in the second period to produce the 2-1 final. Laker goalkeeper P.J. Goodwin (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) made two stops, while his counterpart, Bobby McGinnis, posted a matching save total.

Fredonia finished the game with four corner kicks, while the Lakers had none. The Blue Devils were also called offside five times compared to Oswego State's one.

Oswego State finishes its five-game road trip on Saturday when it visits Buffalo State (5-4-2, 0-4-0) at 1 p.m. The Lakers will be looking to stop a six-game winless streak, while the Bengals will be looking to end a four-game skid.
