Men's Basketball Opens New Year with Easy Win

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball had no problem moving past SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon, earning a 83-51 victory in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego's first win of 2014 helped the team to improve to 8-1 overall on the season.

The Lakers never trailed in the game, opening on a Brian Sortino 3-pointer and never looking back. Oswego steadily built a lead throughout the first half, growing a 27-16 advantage with 6:13 left in the opening period to 43-23 at the break. The margin builder came on a 12-3 run over a 4:23 span where the Lakers held the Fighting Tigers without a field-goal.

Oswego continued the trend, creating a 30-point advantage for most of the second half. Its largest lead came at 2:44 when the Lakers had a 36-point lead at 82-46.

As a team, Oswego dominated nearly every category, including points in the paint (24-14), rebounds (49-30) and points off turnovers (23-8).

Rashawn Powell paced the Lakers with a double-double, scoring team-highs for points (18) and rebounds (11). Powell was 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the field while also collecting a game-high 4 steals. Five of his 11 rebounds came on the offensive board.

Also contributing for the Lakers was Daniel Ross, who chipped in 16 points, and Sortino, who also had double-digits, tallying 12. Ross had a team-best six assists on the day.

Oswego will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when it resumes conference play at Oneonta.
