ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team collected two impressive comeback wins at the Hartwick College/Holiday Inn Tournament on Friday night. In its opening match, Oswego came back from a 1-0 deficit to down St. Lawrence University 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-22). The Lakers then went on to outlast Ithaca College 3-2 (25-19. 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-9) after trailing 2-1 in the nightcap.
With the two victories, Oswego improves to 15-12 while the Saints and Bombers fall to 16-9 and 19-5, respectively.
MATCH ONE – Oswego 3, St. Lawrence 1:
After losing the first set 25-20, the Lakers battled to three-straight set wins to take the match against the Saints.
Kelsey Dillon paced the team with 10 kills with
Emma Moriarty following close behind with nine.
Meaghan Roefs was next for the Lakers with six kills while
Hannah Dahlgren and
Kim Cassa each finished with five.
Olivia Zimmerman took on the role of setter, tying for a match-high 25 assists. Also helping with the assisting duty was
Lauren Edwards with 10.
On defense, Roefs and Dillon led the way again, collecting four blocks apiece. Five different Lakers finished in double digits with
Rachael Ruggaber having a team-high 22. Next was Zimmerman with 13 then Cassa with 12. Edwards and
Jessica Long rounded out the group of five with 11 digs each.
MATCH TWO – Oswego 3, Ithaca 2:
Oswego managed to hand the Bombers just its fifth loss of the season by erasing a 2-1 deficit on its way to a 3-2 win.
For the offense, Cassa was explosive with a match- and career-high 14 kills. Senior
Stephanie Bailey was next on the attack with 10 kills while Dahlgren added nine at a .321 hitting percentage.
Edwards took the role of main setter against Ithaca, leading the squad with 25 assists.
Lindsey Champitto aided in the effort, adding 16 assists.
As a team, the Lakers were dominant on defense with 14 blocks. Oswego was led by Bailey's seven blocks while Dahlgren and Roefs collected six blocks apiece.
Continuing on defense, Ruggaber gave the team 23 digs while three other Lakers had double digits. Long finished with 17, Cassa had 15 and Edwards ended with 10.
Oswego will wrap up play in the tournament on Saturday with games against host Hartwick at 10 a.m. followed by Stevens Institute of Technology at 12 p.m.
