BOX SCOREOSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's soccer team battled tough but fell 2-1 to Union College in Saturday's championship game of the Oswego State Classic at Laker Soccer Field. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 1-1 on the season while the Dutchmen improve to 2-0.
Union got on the board first with a goal by Ethan Strauss in the 18th minute. The Dutchmen held possession for the early parts of the first half before Oswego started to apply pressure and turn the tides. After falling behind 5-1 in shots, the Lakers evened the stat to six apiece by halftime.
Jeff Cohen gave the Dutchmen insurance in the beginning of the second half, scoring at 47:32 to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
Oswego would not fade, however, as
Harrison Rieber cut the Lakers' deficit in half with a goal after needling through the defense at 59:59. Rieber's goal was the result of a pass from
Brody Magro, who earned an assist on the play.
Over the final 30 minutes, Oswego continued to dominate play but was unable to find the back of the net for the equalizer.
The Lakers held the advantage in both shots (13-10) and shots-on-goal (5-4) in the game.
Rieber was named to All-Tournament team for his efforts on the weekend, which included scores in both contests.
Oswego will be back to work at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts Hamilton College in a nonconference matchup.
