OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's soccer team improved to 3-3 on the season with a 2-0 win against Clarkson University on Friday afternoon at Laker Soccer Field. Clarkson falls to 4-4 on the year with the loss.
The game started slowly for both teams, each side with only one shot apiece through the first 10 minutes. Oswego picked up a little momentum after a free kick from
Bri Dolan was headed just high by
Emma Geyer, but both teams went into half scoreless.
In the second half, the Dolan and Geyer connection appeared again. In almost a mirror image of the attempt in the first half, Dolan bombed her free kick in from 35-yards out. Geyer was able to get her head on it again but this time the result favored Oswego. The ball tipped off the keeper's glove and went in to give Oswego the 1-0 lead with 32:27 left in the half.
Clarkson looked to tie it 14 minutes later when Clarkson's Madison Kather beat Oswego keeper
Alyssa Glasshagel at the top of the box, but
Mary Morrison was able to rescue the ball and boot it out just as it reached the goal line.
Oswego took the opportunity to turn its defense into offense.
Bailey Waterbury was able to work the ball up the end line and then sent a cross right in front of the goal to be kicked in by freshman
Alexa Restante putting Oswego up 2-0 with 11 minutes left in the game.
Clarkson didn't back down though. With under five minutes to go, the Golden Knight's Cailey Nieto took a shot from the near post only to be saved by a sprawling Glasshagel. The rebound came right back to Nieto with an opportunity to score on an open net. She toed the ball towards the goal but once again Morrison was able to save the ball right before it crossed the goal line.
With the win, the team records its second shutout of the season, and Glasshagel's first.
Oswego will return to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a match against Hamilton College.
