GENESEO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team took its second split in as many days at the Geneseo Tournament on Saturday morning and afternoon. Oswego started the day with a 3-1 loss to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton before cruising to a 3-0 victory of Hilbert College. At the conclusion of the tournement, s
ophmore Lauren Edwards was nominated to the all tournament team. With the win and the loss, the Lakers are now 8-9 on the year.
MATCH ONE – Canton 3, Oswego 1 (25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 21-25):
Led by
Jessica Long's nine kills in the first set, Oswego got out to a great start, downing Canton 25-14. Canton showed life in the second set, gaining a 21-15 advantage. The Lakers nearly erased the advantage, rattling off five-straight points to cut the Kangaroo lead to 21-20. Oswego could not knot the set, however, as Canton won 25-23 to even the match at one set apiece.
Canton took control of the match with a 25-19 triumph in the third set but the Lakers came into the fourth set poised to reverse the momentum. Oswego jumped out to a 6-0 lead and had that same margin at 19-13. The Kangaroos went on a 7-1 run at that point, tying the set at 20-20. Canton then proceeded to score five of the final six points to earn the set and match.
Long finished with a match-high 13 kills and added 15 digs. Rachel Ruggaber led all players with 32 digs while
Lauren Edwards aided with 21.
Kelsey Dillon was active with 10 kills and five blocks, trailing only
Hannah Dahlgren's match-best seven blocks.
Olivia Zimmerman cashed in 24 assists in the match with Edwards close behind with 13.
MATCH TWO – Oswego 3, Hilbert 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-17):
Oswego breezed past the Hawks in the afternoon game, using 15 different players to capture the victory.
On offense, eight Lakers finished with a kill, led by
Emma Moriarty's nine. Next on that front was Dillon with seven, followed by
Meaghan Roefs' six. Dahlgren and senior
Stephanie Bailey each had three kills while Long,
Sarah Meredith and
Megan Russell all closed the match with two.
For the second time on Saturday, Ruggaber led the team with 17 digs. Edwards paced Oswego with 14 assists against Hilbert while Zimmerman and
Lindsey Champitto each had seven.
The Lakers will be back to the court when they host SUNYAC Pool Play next weekend to open the conference schedule, starting at 5 p.m. with Brockport in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
