UTICA, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's ice hockey team fell 3-2 to the University of St. Thomas Friday afternoon in the first game of the Radisson Thanksgiving Showcase hosted by Utica College. With the loss Oswego moves to 3-4-1 on the year while St. Thomas improves to 5-2-2.
After Oswego allowed a power play goal in the first period, the team would rally in the second scoring on its own special team opportunity. With the man advantage, Oswego's
Andrew Barton connected on a pass from
Sean Federow in the high slot that beat the Tommies goalkeeper top shelf with 7:22 to go in the period. The tie would be severed though as St. Thomas' Jordan Levick scored on a wrister just 2:46 later.
Still in the second, the Lakers were able to tie it up again as
Kenny Neil collected his fourth of the year. The junior received a
Matt Galati pass in close on the goaltender and was able to jam it pass him on the second attempt. Knotted up at two a piece, the Lakers would close up the period with momentum on their side.
In the third, a giveaway in the defensive zone would prove costly as the Tommies converted on a 2-on-0 to take a late lead. The Lakers had an opportunity in the dying seconds of regulation but Galati's shot off the faceoff win was saved and St. Thomas took the 3-2 victory.
Adrian Ignagni played all but the final 38 seconds in net for Oswego, picking up a season-high 33 saves.
Oswego also owned the faceoff dot, winning 40 of the 73 taken, including 15 wins from
Alex Botten.
Men's ice hockey returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as the team takes on Saint John's University in the second game of the Thanksgiving Showcase at Utica's Memorial Auditorium.
