Lakers Set New Program Record on Senior Day

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oswego State women's ice hockey team defeated Stevenson University Saturday afternoon at the Marano Campus Center Arena by a final score of 5-2. With the win the Lakers improve to 18-4-1 while Stevenson falls to 16-8-1. The win marks a new program record for the women's ice hockey team.

Bridget Smith, the only member of the class of 2015 on the squad, added to her already stellar season, saving 29 of the 31 shots she faced. The goaltender was then honored after the game during the senior day festivities.

Olivia Ellis scored the first goal for the Lakers, beating the goalie one-on-one to the glove side at 15:32 in the first period. The goal was her 10th of the season and added to her team-high 22 points. Oswego later went on the power-play with under 15 seconds left in the first, and were able to tally another goal. Alli Ullrich ripped a slapper from the blue line that was then shoveled into the net by Alexa Aramburu with less than one second left on the clock.

Oswego carried the momentum into the second period, scoring two goals in the first 4 minutes. The Lakers third goal came when Jayme McCreary took a shot from the high slot which was first tipped by Sarah Grupp and then again by Ashley Lyman, beating the Stevenson goaltender. Just 55 seconds later, Andrea Noss converted another Laker power-play opportunity, giving Oswego a 4-0 lead. Stevenson didn't give up, scoring two of their own midway through the second period, and the teams went into the second intermission with a score of 4-2.

Brianna Rice added one more for Oswego at 5:11 in the third as she scooped in a rebound in front of the net during a Lakers power-play. The score would then remain 5-2 through the end of regulation.

Special teams were a key to Saturdays win, as the Lakers converted on three of its four power-play opportunities. The team also excelled on defensive side of things, as they killed off all three Stevenson power-plays.

Women's ice hockey takes to the ice again at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Elmira to take on the Soaring Eagles.
