OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team earned its first SUNYAC victory as it defeated Potsdam 59-40 at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Bears fall to 1-12 on the season (0-6 SUNYAC).
The Lakers got off to a quick start, going on an 8-0 run to start the game off. Taylor Sorrell recorded six of those on two made 3-pointers, starting what would be a career day for the senior. She would go on to make five more threes throughout the contest (tied for second most in school history) and finished the day with a career-high 25 points.
Potsdam kept it close after the early run but Oswego never relinquished the lead. The team pulled away in the second half, holding a double-digit lead over the Bears from 8:36 to the end buzzer, winning by as much as 23 at one point.
Aiding in the scoring department was
Mary Mazzella who scored 14 and
Alison Nunziato with seven.
Underneath the hope,
Zana Dillard led all players with 17 rebounds. She was helped by
Nicole SantaMaria and Mazzella who each recorded eight.
Women's basketball returns to the court at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday as it heads to Brockport for a rematch with Golden Eagles. The Lakers fell to Brockport on Jan. 12, narrowly escaping with a 56-54 win.
