Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Oswego Battles Regionally Ranked Brockport Tough

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team battled regionally-ranked Brockport to the brink in each of the first two games, but the Golden Eagles prevailed in each, going on to win 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-11). It was the opening game of a SUNYAC Pool Play weekend hosted by Fredonia with conference postseason implications on the line. After Friday's match, the Lakers are 13-12 overall and 4-3 in the SUNYAC while conference-leader Brockport remains perfect in league action (25-2, 7-0).

Oswego and Brockport were neck-and-neck in the opening set, tying at 12 different points while swapping leads multiple teams. The squads were knotted as late as 23-23 but the Golden Eagles were able to capture the final two points to escape with a 1-0 edge in the match. The second game featured a scrappy Laker team, who trailed early by as many as seven. Oswego found itself down 22-15 late in the second, but fought back to force extra points. Tied at 25-25, Brockport gave Oswego a dose of déjà vu, collecting the final two points to again dodge a Laker victory. In the third set, the Golden Eagles would not allow Oswego to get its footing, finishing the match on a 17-6 run for the three-set triumph.

Senior Emma Moriarty paced Oswego in both kills (9) and digs (17). Also finishing with double-figure digs was Rina Qelaj (13). The Lakers got its most assists from Lauren Edwards, tallying 15, with senior classmate Lindsey Champitto distributing 12 helpers. Champitto chipped in seven digs and Edwards had six – a category where she eclipsed the 1,000-dig plateau in the Lakers' previous match.

Helping in the offensive effort was Ariel Murawski (8), Alison Sullivan (6), Megan Russell (5), Meaghan Roefs (4) and Isabella Winklestine (1), combining for 24 kills. Russell led the way with four blocks on defense while Roefs (3), Murawski (2), Sullivan (1) and Moriarity (1) totaled seven.

Oswego will return to action at 10 a.m. on Saturday when it faces Potsdam before a 12:30 p.m. tilt with the host Blue Devils. Those represent the last conference matchups of the season for the Lakers and will play an integral role in determining their postseason lives.
