OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team defeated Clarkson University on Tuesday by one point—72-71—in overtime. Oswego improves to 3-1 on the year, while Clarkson falls to 2-2.
Trailing 64-62 with less than 15 seconds remaining,
Mykelle Krecko put back a missed shot to tie the game and send it to overtime. Krecko recorded his second-straight double-double with 21 points on 10-of-16 (63%) shooting and hauled in 15 boards, setting a new career-high.
Throughout overtime, Clarkson led Oswego the entire time except when it mattered the most. With the Golden Knights leading by four and under two minutes left,
Ian Schupp sank a couple of free throws to bring Oswego within two at 71-69.
After the Lakers forced an empty Clarkson possession, Schupp brought the ball up the court and fired it into the paint to
Keith Tyson. The senior forward faked up and dished it out to the left side where
Jamir Ferebee spotted up for the eventual game-winning 3-pointer. It was one of three makes from behind the arc for Ferebee, who finished with 17 points on 71 percent (5-for-7) shooting.
Schupp played a crucial role on offense, finishing with 13 points and dishing out five helpers. The junior guard sank a trio of 3-pointers in clutch moments. Tyson contributed largely on the defense with 10 rebounds, but most importantly by collecting the block on Clarkson's final shot at the buzzer, which could have earned it the win.
With just under nine minutes left in regulation, Oswego went on a 19-8 run to turn a eight point Golden Knight advantage into a six point lead for the good. It would not hold as Clarkson would string together nine-straight points to reclaim the lead at 62-59.
Oswego will return to the hardwood at 7 p.m. Saturday evening for a contest with Colby College at the Hamilton Invitational.
