NORFOLK, Va. -- The Oswego State baseball team earned another sweep on the final day of the Marlin Invite and improved to 4-0/ on the young season. In the first game of the day, the squad defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by the score of 7-2. In the second game from the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College, they defeated the Marlins 10-2 giving them an unblemmished 4-0 record on the weekend.
Oswego 7, RPI 2
In the leadoff spot, Wes Randall immediately took advantage of an errant pitch, which hit him and gave him a free pass. The junior stole second during the next at-bat and was driven in on an RBI-double from Jordan Giller to put the Lakers in the lead. Randall also added an RBI-triple in the Oswego half of the eighth inning to cap off his two-hit day.
Giller then moved to third on the first of four wild pitches in the inning; he would score on the second of such pitches to make it 2-0 Oswego.
After RPI nabbed a run in the top of the third inning, Oswego plated a run in their half of the fourth and fifth frames. First Collin Thompson drove in Zach Kollar with a sacrifice fly; in the following inning, Brian Hamilton stole third and then scrambled home on a throwing error by the catcher.
Giller made yet another impact on the game with an RBI-single in the seventh inning to drive in Brian Hamilton and push the Laker lead to 5-2. A few batters later, Myles Kutscher singled in Giller.
Robert Donnelly manned the mound for Oswego, tossing five innings of one-run ball while striking out four Engineers.
Nathan Boughton and
Brandon Schultzkie combined for the final four innings to secure the victory.
Oswego 10, Virginia Welsyan 2In the second game, Oswego was able to string together a few runs in the second inning and the seventh to earn its second win over Virginia Wesleyan on the weekend and complete the weekend sweep.
Oswego opened up the scoring in the first after Giller was able to knock E. Hamilton home with a single into center. The Marlins answered though, recording a run over their own in the bottom of the frame.
Virginia Weslyan helped the Lakers get started in the second after Kollar led off the side advancing to first after getting hit by a pitch and Capobianco moved him to second on a fielding error. With the bases juiced after a Thompson walk, Randall singled to drive home Kollar. Donnelly followed the same routine, singling to earn an RBI. The final run of the inning was earned by Thompson as he crossed the dish on an E. Hamilton sacrifice.
After Randall drove home Kollar in the sixth to make it 5-2, Oswego opened up its bats in the seventh. Giller started the run, advancing to first on an error, followed by a Kutscher walk. Kollar then sent one to deep center, scoring Giller and moving Kutscher to second. Whelan then pinch hit for Deblasio, getting hit by pitch and loading the bases once again. Thompson came through with the ducks on the pond, singling through the rightside and driving home two. Randall would single through the right side next and earn the Lakers the fourth run of the inning.
With a comfortable 9-2 lead, Oswego was able to tag on a final insurance run in the final inning as Thompson doubled, sending home Randall.
Both Randall and Thompson finished with three RBI, while four other Lakers each earned one.
Brian Nolan earned the win for Oswego, allowing five hits through five innings and striking out four.He was relieved by
Bobby Zywicki who pitched two hitless innings and
Mike Abrams who manned the mound for one.
Mickey Putillo was sent in for the final frame, closing the side without allowing a hit.
