SALISBURY, Md. -- The Oswego State baseball team defeated the No. 4 Salisbury Seagulls, 15-6 on Saturday afternoon from SU Baseball Field. The Lakers improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Gulls fell to 4-3.
The win, which was number 100 for head coach Scott Landers career tally, was largely fueled by a five-run third inning and a six-run fifth inning.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the third inning, Oswego founds its bats. Freshman catcher Collin Thompson started off the inning by slicing a single to center field. After a Wes Randall single Brian Hamilton got the scoring going by finding the gap in center field for a double to drive in Thompson.
In the next at-bat Eric Hamilton popped a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Randall for the first of his career-high six RBI on the day. Later on, Myles Kutscher, John Barnes and Eli Holton would nab hits leading to two more runs.
With a 7-4 lead heading into the fifth inning, third baseman E. Hamilton looked to continue aiding the effort as he stepped to the plate with all three bags occupied. On the first pitch of the at bat, the junior just missed the sweet spot fouling the ball off into the screen. Yet, he did not miss the next pitch as he crushed it well over the outfield fence for his first homer of the season and first career grand slam.
E. Hamilton was not done as he added an insurance run to the Laker total in the ninth with another bomb, this time of the solo type. After pinch hitting for Barnes, Matthew Deblasio finished Oswego's scoring by ripping a double into center to drive Kutscher who walked in the previous at bat.
Tim Cronin got his second win of the year after he manned the bump for four innings and struck out four Seagulls. Brian Nolan and Bobby Zywicki provided five innings out of the bullpen allowing just one earned run.
The Lakers will return to the diamond Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader slate at Wesley College. Â
