Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Comeback Falls Short in Wild Ending

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In the 120th meeting between the two teams there was no shortage of excitement  as Oswego fell 4-3 in overtime to the No. 3/5 Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday night at the Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh. The Lakers move to 10-8-2 on the year and 7-5-1 in the conference. Plattsburgh stays on top of the SUNYAC standings with 10-1-1 record (17-3-1 overall).

As the game went into overtime, Oswego found chances first as the Cardinal's took an early penalty. The power play was squandered though as the Lakers took a penalty of their own 1:10 into their opportunity. Neither team could find the back of the net on their power plays and both would return to full strength with less than two minutes on the clock. As time dwindled down it seemed as though the game was to end in a tie, but a Laker turnover in their own zone gave Plattsburgh's Connor Gorman the puck with 2.4 seconds left. The forward made no mistake and beat Zawadzki to the far post, thus ending the game with Plattsburgh on top 4-3.

To start the game Cardinals took the lead first as Kyle Hall was able to get a puck by Matt Zawadzki 4:33 into the first. Oswego countered quickly though as Shawn Hulshof evened the score just 28 seconds later. The junior received a pass from defensemen Sean Federow and sent the puck bar down into the Plattsburgh net. Plattsburgh would regain the lead before the buzzer for intermission, taking a 2-1 lead into the locker room.

In the second, Oswego would go on the early offensive as Plattsburgh got two minutes for holding 8:53 in. Although the team didn't convert on the special team's opportunity, the Lakers were able to tie it up directly after the Cardinals returned to even strength. Mitchell Herlihey nabbed his fifth of the year getting help from Alex Botten and Brandon Adams on the play.

With the score tied heading into the final stanza, it was Oswego who took hold of moment. As the Cardinals attempted to clear the zone, Adams poked the puck away, setting up an odd man rush. He passed across the goal mouth to Connor Boyd for the one-timer that was stopped by the Plattsburgh netminder. Chris Waterstreet was there to clean up the rebound though, giving the Lakers the 3-2 lead 1:53 into the period.

Oswego played tough defense for the remainder of the third, keeping Plattsburgh off the board until the final minutes. With both teams down a man, Plattsburgh won a draw deep in Oswego territory. The Cardinal defensemen ripped a shot from the blue line that tied the game up with 2:13 to go. Regulation would go on to end in a 3-3 draw.

On the penalty kill, Oswego really excelled, killing off all five Cardinal chances including the one in extra time.

Matt Zawadzki played all 65 minutes between the pipes for the Lakers, finishing with a season-high 35 saves.

Men's ice hockey will return to the ice at 7 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to nearby Potsdam to take on the Bears.
