OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team fell 5-4 in overtime to William Smith Saturday afternoon at the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the loss, the Lakers move to 9-8-1 on the year and 5-7-3 in the conference. William Smith improves to 8-10-2 overall (3-8-2 ECAC West).
After allowing an early goal in the first, the Lakers were able to find their stride in the second.
Ashley Lyman began the scoring 7:36 into the stanza as she received an
Alyssa Brockmann pass on a 2-on-1 break and had no problem finishing it.
Alli Ullrich had Oswego's next goal, rocketing a puck from the blue line. The shot found its way through numerous players in front of the net and beat the keeper with 4:53 left on the clock. The Lakers weren't done there though, as just 57 seconds later Oswego increased its lead to 3-1. Brockmann, who was located in the left faceoff circle, corralled a pass from McCreary at the blue line. She then rifled a puck into a mix of players and by chance, the puck deflected off
Andrea Noss's skate and into the goal.
Still, William Smith never lost its composure, sandwiching the second intermission with goals, including one with 44 seconds to go in the second and another 47 seconds into the third.
Oswego reacted quickly though, scoring 24 seconds after the Heron's third goal.
Brianna Rice gained the zone and sent a shot that ricocheted of the post.
Brennan Butler was then able to finish the job as the Heron goalkeeper couldn't locate the puck behind her.
With the lead secured for the majority of the third, Oswego looked as though it were to seal the victory. William Smith put an end to that though, scoring with 43 seconds left in regulation as they pulled their netminder to gain the extra attacker. The Herons then notched the game-winning overtime goal with 2:16 on the clock.
Tori Trovato played the entire game for the Lakers, racking up 29 saves on the day.
The Lakers dominated the face off dot, winning 51 of the 68 puck drops, including double-digit wins from Noss,
Lizzy Marks and
Erika Truschke.
Women's ice hockey will return to the rink at 4 p.m. on Sunday as the team finishes its home-and-home series with William Smith at The Cooler in Geneva, N.Y.
