OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team fought back from two goals down in the fourth period only to have a late St. John Fisher College goal spoil the comeback effort 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. With the loss, Oswego falls to 2-3 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 3-2.
Fisher possessed the ball with 3:31 remaining and after nearly losing the ball on a blocked pass, the Cardinals elected to take a timeout with 1:35 to go in the contest. Just 13 seconds out of the timeout, the referees put the 30-second shot clock on for Fisher. Oswego pressured the Cardinals, who were struggling to get off a shot as the shot-clock was waning. Matthew Condon threw a sidearm pass to the point for Nick Papayanakos who quickly released a shot as the shot-clock read one second. The ball tucked just under the cross bar with 52.2 seconds to go in the tilt, proving to be the game-winner. Oswego won the next face-off and called a timeout with 12 seconds left. The Lakers got a man around the back of the cage but a pass to the front of the crease went wide of its target as time expired.
This situation came on the heels of a two-goal Laker comeback after trailing 9-7 at 10:33 in the fourth quarter. Oswego answered the challenge with a
Ryan Jelen tally just 31 seconds later and a
Luke Krizman notch 33 ticks after that, knotting the game at 9-9.
The Lakers never trailed at the end of a quarter until the final period. After one period, Oswego held a 2-1 advantage before a late Krizman goal in the second sent the teams into halftime tied at 5-5. Oswego again erased a deficit in the third, claiming a 7-6 edge heading into the final 15 minutes.
James Lennon, Krizman, and Jelen each finished with two goals on the day, with Lennon adding an assist as well.
Tyler Nason notched one goal and one assist and picked up three ground balls. Rounding out the scoring were
Adam Burlew and Jarrod Wilkon, who scored a goal apiece and also combined to scoop up eight of the teams 33 ground balls.
Oswego had a slight edge at the faceoff X, where it won 12-of-22, led by
Chase Izyk's 11-for-22. The team played with discipline, committing just one penalty while drawing five one-minute penalties on the Cardinals.
Wyatt Russo was strong in net for the Lakers, recording 10 saves for a .500 save percentage.
Men's lacrosse will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels to Alfred University for a nonconference matchup with the Saxons.
