Baseball Drops Conference DH To Fredonia

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Oswego State baseball team dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to the Fredonia Blue Devils, 8-3 and 7-6, Sunday afternoon. With the loss the Lakers fall to 8-3 and 0-2 in the SUNYAC; Fredonia improves to 8-3 and 2-0.

Game 1: Fredonia 8, Oswego 3

The Lakers got on the board early in this contest, which started at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale Florida, when the top of the lineup strung together four straight hits to open the game. This culminated in Myles Kutscher ripping an RBI-double down the left-field line to drive in Brian Hamilton from second.

After the Blue Devils tallied five unanswered runs in the bottom half of the first and second innings, Wes Randall was able to start a Laker rally with a walk. Eric Hamilton stepped to the plate next and continued his early season tear as he launched a two-run homer to left off a check swing.

Fredonia was able to answer with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the score 8-3 in favor of them. In the midst of an at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, the rains came pouring in and forced a suspension of play until Sunday afternoon at Polk State College.

Upon resuming play in the game, Eli Holton came in as a pinch hitter and smoked a ball to the gap legging out a triple. The Lakers were unable to get him home though and thus dropped their first SUNYAC contest of the season.

Game 2: Fredonia 7, Oswego 6 (9 innings)

In the second game, the script followed a very similar one as in the first game. Oswego was able to get on the board early in the scheduled seven inning contest when Jordan Giller laced a single driving in E. Hamilton.

Fredonia followed up the one run in the Oswego half to score four runs over their opening three innings to take a 4-1 lead. Those runs would stay unanswered until the fifth inning when Wes Randall tripled to start a two-out rally. Following him, Brian Hamilton found the sweet spot and lined a pitch into outfield scoring Randall.

Like his brother before him, E. Hamilton also cracked one with this one finding the gap for a double and driving in B. Hamilton all the way from first to make it 4-3. In the sixth the rally continued with a Kutscher double and then an RBI-single from Holton to tie it up.

Both teams held steady over the next few frames as we headed to extra innings. Mickey Putillo entered the game to pitch for the Lakers and shut down the side in the seventh before working his way out of a jam in the eighth.

In the penultimate frame, the Lakers found magic in another two-out rally. Randall and B. Hamilton earned their way on base via a walk and an error. With E. Hamilton having torched the Blue Devils all day, Fredonia chose to intentionally walk the slugger. Next Giller stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and smacked a double down the line in right to drive in two runs and put the Lakers on top 6-4.

The lead would not hold, however, and Fredonia found a spot deep in the outfield to drive in the winning runs.

Brian Nolan allowed four runs in 5.1 innings pitched in the no decision. The freshman struck out seven Blue Devil batters in the start.

Oswego will return to the diamond on Monday to finish up its three-game series with Fredonia at 2:30 p.m. from Lake Myrtle Park (Field 7). After the conclusion of the conference matchup, the Lakers will take on St. Michael's College in a single game at 6 p.m.
