OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oswego State women's lacrosse team rolled - scoring 20 or more goals for the second-straight day - to an easy 22-6 victory over SUNY Canton on Friday evening at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego's 21 goals are the most this year, outdoing the 20 it posted in a win over New Paltz on Thursday. With the win, the Lakers are now 9-3 on the year while the Kangaroos drop to 10-4.
Oswego's win on Thursday over the Hawks also clinched the program's first trip to the SUNYAC Championship since 2005. Seeding for the tournament will be determined after the league's final two regular season contests.
On Friday, Canton opened the game with a tally but Oswego answered by stringing together 10-consecutive goals to capture control that it would never surrender. The Lakers had a 15-4 advantage at the half and only extended the lead in the second stanza.
Teresa Shattuck showed the way for the home squad, recording a career-high nine points. The freshman accumulated that total with another career-high - distributing five assists - to go along with four goals.
For the second day in a row, 10 Lakers notched a point, with everyone having multiple points on Friday. Next in line after T. Shattuck was
Gemma O'Kane with four goals and one assist followed by
Emily Lange's four-points, all on goals.
Erannan Shattuck went for a goal and two assists while six Lakers finished with two points. Those individuals were
Kendall Appelbaum (2G),
Briana Kimble (2G),
Dani Cronk (1G, 1A),
Kelsey Henderson (1G, 1A),
Jayme McCreary (1G, 1A) and
Esther Gabriel (2G). Cronk's goal and assist were both firsts for the season, as the sophomore returned from injury on Friday.
In net, fellow sophomore Angela Ponta made six saves on 12 shots-on goal, winning her ninth contest of the year.
Erin Ganley closed out the contest but did not have to face a shot between the pipes.
Gabriel made sure the Lakers owned possession, winning a game-high eight draws. The senior helped by four draw controls from both Lange and Henderson. Gabriel also led all players with five ground balls in the tilt.
As a team, Oswego outshot Canton 38-15, out drew the Kangaroos (23-5) and had 11 more ground balls (19-8). The Lakers were nearly perfect on the clear, completing 12-of-13 chances.
Oswego will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Potsdam to take on the Bears in a SUNYAC meeting.
