OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team picked up a crucial 10-8 conference win over Potsdam on Wednesday night at Laker Turf Stadium. With the victory, Oswego improves to 6-8 overall but, more importantly, 2-3 in the SUNYAC while Potsdam falls to 9-5, 2-3. An Oswego victory at Plattsburgh – or a Potsdam loss at Brockport on Saturday – would clinch the Lakers a spot in the SUNYAC Championship.
In a back-and-forth game, Oswego trailed the Bears 6-5 going into the final quarter. The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth, scoring the period's first five goals to control a 10-6 advantage over Potsdam. It started with a
James Lennon unassisted tally just 33 seconds into the quarter. A little over a minute later,
Tyler Nason gained a momentum swing for Oswego, scoring a goal unassisted on a delayed penalty. That gave the Lakers an edge it would never relinquish as well as a man-up opportunity for a one-minute slash on Potsdam. Izyk again won at the X and
Luke Krizman did not squander the extra-man, finding the net off a pass from
Bobby Emerson. Four minutes passed with neither team scoring before Emerson was at it again, distributing a pass this time to Nason for a tally and 9-6 lead with 8:02 remaining. Oswego final goal of the run and the game came from
Christian Nairy, who beat his defender and chucked the ball off the turf and past the goalie for the score at 4:55.
Wyatt Russo stood on his head all game, stopping 19 Potsdam shots to set a new single-game career-high for the junior. His previous career-mark came during his freshman year when Russo made 17 saves in an 11-9 loss to Clarkson University at home.
On the day, Krizman and Nason paced the Lakers with four-points apiece. The former scored each of his points on goals while the latter had a balanced outing with two goals and two assists. Also recording multiple points were Nairy (2G), Emerson (2A) and
Jarrod Wilkom (1G, 1A). Closing out the point scoring for Oswego was Lennon's aforementioned goal and
Mark Frega assist.
Izyk finished 12-for-20 on faceoffs and tied for the team-high in ground balls, gathering six along with Nairy. Nairy also had a team-high two caused turnovers, while
Teddy Phillips had the other Laker forced turnover to go along with four ground balls.
Oswego will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it travels to Plattsburgh for the final regular season game.
