ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team split its second day matches of the Nazareth College Invitational, beating Medaille College in the opener before dropping a match to the host Golden Flyers in the nightcap. With the split, Oswego is now 5-2 on the year.
MATCH ONE – Oswego 3, Medaille 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-14):
Solid attack and balanced blocking led Oswego past the Mavericks in its first match of the day. Three of the top four Lakers hit above .400 against Medaille, featuring
Ariel Murawski's team-high eight kills at a .421 clip. Although they had less kills,
Megan Russell successfully attacked six sets for a team-best .600 hitting percentage while
Lauren Fie totaled four kills with a .471 success rate. Senior
Emma Moriarty tied Russell with six kills while classmate
Meaghan Roefs chipped in three.
Four Lakers finished with multiple blocks in the tilt, paced by Moriarty and Fie's four apiece. Close behind was Russell with three on two solos and an assist while Muraski had an even one solo and one assist.
Oswego racked up 11 service aces as well, led by
Alison Berger's four and
Jessica Long's three.
Lauren Edwards,
Lindsey Champitto,
Sarah Braddon and Moriarity each finished with one ace. Edwards and Champitto did their usual teamwork in the setting department, splitting the duties evenly with 10 apiece.
MATCH TWO – Nazareth 3, Oswego 1 (25-22, 24-26, 17-25, 18-25):
The Lakers captured the first set with relative ease, eventually downing Nazareth 25-22. Oswego jumped out to a 17-10 advantage in the second set, but the Golden Flyers flipped the script with 16 out of the game's final 23 points for a 26-24 come-from-behind win. Nazareth then used the momentum to take the next two sets for the triumph.
Murawski (12) and Moriarty (10) paired for 22 kills in the contest with Edwards assisting on a majority of those, closing with 24 helpers. Champitto aided with 15 assist as well as 12 digs, only outdone by Moriarty's 14 passes.
The defense finished with six team blocks, partially contributed by a trio of two blocks apiece: Roefs, Russell and
Alison Sullivan.
Oswego will return to the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts St. John Fisher College in a nonconference matchup.
