UTICA, N.Y. – The No. 8/9 Oswego State women's ice hockey team fell in the backend of the home-and-home series with the Utica College Pioneers on Saturday evening. Oswego moves to 12-3 and 6-2 in the ECAC West after the 2-1 loss. Utica improves to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Utica started off the contest firing, looking to return the favor to the Lakers after Oswego's 2-0 triumph at home on Friday evening.
Mariah Madrigal turned away the first several shots before letting one slip by. She stopped 29 opposing shots on the evening, while taking the ice for 59 minutes.
In the second period, both sides fought to keep players on the ice as many penalties were handed out. The Pioneers were called for a 10 minute misconduct penalty, giving Oswego a huge chance to climb back in. Although Oswego was unable to take advantage at the moment, another power play opportunity presented itself just minutes later.
On this chance around the 18-minute mark of the second period, the Lakers took advantage and scored their lone goal.
Alli Ullrich found
Victoria Blake on the far side and the White Rock, S.C. native slapped it past Utica goalie Keira Goin for the score.
Women's ice hockey returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday for another ECAC West contest. The Lakers will travel to the Keystone State for a couple of games against Neumann University.
