OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego volleyball team split a pair of conference matches on Saturday, defeating Oneonta, 3-1, before fall to Fredonia by the same score. Oswego moves to 9-11 overall and 3-3 in conference. Oneonta drops to 8-14 and 2-3 in conference while Fredonia improves to 13-7 and 5-1 in the SUNYAC.
In the day's opening match, the Oswego offense came out firing on all cylinders. The Lakers put up fourteen kills in each of the opening two sets to cruise to identical 25-19 set scores. Oswego's middle blocking tandem of junior
Alison Sullivan and sophomore
Lauren Fie each had seven kills apiece by the end of the second stanza.
The third set was back and forth until 9-9 when the Red Dragons would go on a 10-2 run to put the set away and win 25-15.
The Lakers would regain their composure during the fourth set while pushing the lead to six at 20-14. Senior
Isabella Winklestine had four kills in the set to help the team win 25-19.
Sullivan led the Lakers with 13 kills and six blocks while sophomore
Sarah Braddon had 15 digs on the defensive side. Junior
Alison Berger dished out 15 assists while teammate
Julia Flohr added 13.
Oswego stayed hot to start the Fredonia match, getting out to a 20-14 lead in the first with three kills from Winklestine and three from freshman
Melissa Lussier. Fredonia would close the gap to 24-23 on a pair of Kristen Stanek kills, but a kill from sophomore
Shauna O'Flaherty would clinch the opener.
The Blue Devils serving game would pick up in the second leading to a 10-3 deficit for the home squad and they would cruise to a 25-12 equilizer.Â
The third set mirrored the first as the teams would trade points until 14-14 when Fredonia went on a six point run to gain some separation. The Lakers would get it back to 23-22 on a pair of blocks, but Fredonia was able to prevail on a kill from Stanek.
The fourth set was another close one early as the teams were within striking distance at 10-9 before a six point Blue Devil run pushed their lead to 16-9. The Lakers couldn't crack the Fredonia defense in falling 25-17.
Sullivan and Finn each had eight kills while Lussier, O'Flaherty, and sophomore
Laura Finn each had six. Senior
Rina Qelaj anchored the defense with 24 digs. Flohr chipped in with 18 assists and six digs.
