POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2017-18 season 82-66 at Clarkson University on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Lakers are now 1-2 on the year while the Golden Knights also own that same mark.
Oswego owned most of the game, with the home team holding its last lead with more than 10 minutes left in the opening period. The Lakers were able to push its advantage to as many as 21 in the contest, eventually collecting the 16-point triumph. Defense was a pivotal aspect of the game, as Oswego turned Clarkson over 16 times and flipped that into 18 points. Conversely, the Lakers only committed 10 turnovers which resulted in just four Clarkson points.
The offense was just as impressive, as Oswego was able to shoot 45.1% from the field, 44.4% from beyond the arc and was nearly perfect at the line, missing only two of 26 free-throw attempts.
Oswego had the top two scorers in the game, as
Jamir Ferebee scored a game-high 24 points, including 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. Also recording more than 20 points in the game was Ferebee's senior classmate
Ian Schupp with 22. Schupp was also perfect from the line (4-for-4) while the senior duo combined to shot exactly 50.0% (7-for-14) from distance.
The Lakers' point guard
Liam Sanborn was in double-figures as well, scoring 12 points on 4-for-7 from the field.
On the glass, 10 of the 11 Lakers that appeared on Tuesday recorded at least one rebound, paced by Ferebee's seven. Schupp was second on the squad with four boards while
Josh Ivey and
Tyler Pierre each had three. Sanborn,
Joe Spinola and
Nick Fazio each grabbed two caroms while Fazio accounted for four of Oswego's five blocks.
The Lakers will now take the rest of the week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before trying to make it two-straight wins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Nazareth College.
