OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team dominated play in a 6-1 victory over SUNYAC Canton on Friday night in the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the victory, the No. 2/3 Lakers improve to 17-4-1 on the year while the Kangaroos drop to 7-15-2.
Canton was whistled early and often in the tilt, as referees sent a 'Roo to the box on four separate occasions in the first, including a five-minute major for boarding. While Canton served that boarding penalty, Oswego tallied three goals, the first coming on a 5-on-3 advantage.
Matt Galati reversed the puck with a backhand to
Stephen Johnson, creating an alley in the 'Roo defense. Johnson wasted no time exploiting the hole, send a pass from the left wing to the right post for an easy goal for
Kenny Neil. Less than three minutes later, the Lakers earned a goal in a very similar way as Johnson started the passing to
Shawn Hulshof, who was situated on the left wing. Hulshof made a nearly identical pass to the right post as Oswego's previous goal, with
Joey Davies receiving the puck for almost as simple a goal as Neil's aforementioned notch.
With 28 seconds left in the boarding infraction,
Chris MacMillan ripped a shot from the point, just inside the blue line, for his first-career goal. The freshman was aided on the play by
Sean Federow and
Andrew Barton. MacMillan's classmate
Tyson Bruce played a bit of anything-you-can-do, I-can do better by scoring his first-collegiate goal just 38 seconds later, his with both teams at even-strength.
The second period saw both squads find the back of the net, with the Lakers' coming first at 4:01. Hulshof sent a pass out of the Oswego zone along the boards and it ricocheted toward the center of the ice before being corralled by
Josh Zizek at the red line. Zizek skated up ice before finding senior
Chris Waterstreet for his fourth goal of the year. Canton then earned its first – AND ONLY – goal of the game on a power-play at 7:16.
Oswego's last goal of the game came from Zizek as he switched from distributor to scorer in the final period. Federow sent a hard shot from the blue line off the goalie which produced a rebound chance.
Alex Botten gathered the puck but made an unselfish play, pushing a pass to Zizek on the left post. Zizek was able to jam the puck into the goal just before the goalie's skate reached the post in an attempt to save the chance.
David Jacobson earned the win with five saves over two periods of play while
Cedric Hansen had an outstanding final period, stopping 10 'Roo shots in 20 minutes of action.
As a team, Oswego dominated Canton in shots (57-25), shots-on goal (33-16) and faceoffs won (42-25)
The Lakers and 'Roos will complete this home-and-home weekend series at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Canton.
